FRANKFURT -(Dow Jones)- The second week of holiday shopping was better than a year ago, the Association of German Retailers, or HDE, said Sunday, citing its survey of retailers.
"After a slow start, holiday shopping really began to take off last week," the association said in a statement.
In the coming weeks, retailers expect consumer spending to pick up as it has in previous years.
Among the popular purchases so far were sweets and small gifts such as books, CDs, DVDs, as well as more expensive items like netbooks and jewelry, HDE said.
